A New Beginning!
In recent weeks, San Ignacio has seen the establishment of the first of its kind, a humane society that will look out for the well being of all animals especially dogs, in our area.
The project was spearheaded by San Ignacio veterinarian Dr. Edwardo Tesecum from PAWS Veterinary Clinic on Joseph Andrews Drive. He joined forces with Dr. Isabelle Paquete-Durand, also a veterinarian, Pan Newton of the Peace Corps, Terri Wallace, Justin Ford, Ada Awe, Maria Tzul, Megan Casey and Macarena Rose to form what is now known as Cayo Animal Protection Society (C.A.P.S.).
The society is open to all animal lovers, old and young, male and female who wish to strive for the improvement of the quality of life for both citizens and animals of Belize. They hope to provide many special services to the community as well as to provide facilities for unwanted and stray animals that roam the streets with the hope of finding homes for them.
It is an ambitious plan that will be fruitfull when we all do our part. Such a society has been long overdue in San Ignacio. Part of the process is to educate the community what it means to be responsible pet owners and CAPS hope to do so. What better way to show our love than to care for our pets.

CAPS strives to improve the quality of life for citizens and animals of Belize, especially those in the Cayo District thereby contributing to a safer and healthier environment by educating the general public on responsible animal care.
Our objectives are: 1) To provide a facility (shelter) to house un
wanted animals until homes can be found for
them. 2) To provide a facility where medical care as
well as humane euthanasia of sick, injured or
unwanted animals can take place. 3) To provide low-cost spraying and neutering
as well as deparasitation and vaccination of
dogs and cats. 4) To provide activities and services which
promote responsible pet care.

Letter to our patrons:
The Board of Directors at C.A.P.S. is pleased to announce that our ambitious team of dedicated animal welfare advocates has been hard at work. In our first month as an organization, we have initiated formative steps toward obtaining full legal status as an NGO in Belize. The process of registering as an NGO in Belize requires the formation of a legal structure, a process that we are currently engaged in with the assistance of U.S. Peace Corp. volunteers. Additionally, some of our board members and volunteers have taken active steps to improve the quality of life for several of Cayos stray animals. While one C.A.P.S. member is privately providing care and shelter for an ever-growing number of stray dogs, in several cases our member veterinarians have generously provided their services.
Addressing our immediate short-term objectives has been tedious and time consuming. Several members of the Board of Directors and Volunteers have been working toward establishing a location for the C.A.P.S. animal shelter. We are currently obtaining donated and purchased construction material and other equipment that is essential to providing an exceptional facility for Cayo’s stray animals. We are actively seeking wood, fencing material, cement, cement blocks, zinc roofing, hoses, piping, water tanks, furniture, blankets, wooden locking donation boxes and animal care products including food and medicine. C.A.P.S. is seeking and has received monetary donations to fund the construction of our animal shelter and it’s associated costs.
Our efforts regarding public interface have resulted in several exciting initiatives. Several of our volunteers have successfully petitioned limited funding from the U.S. and technical assistance from several Humane Society Chapters in Belize and the U.S.. Board of Directors President Dr. Edwardo Tesecum, in cooperation with the Cayo Canine Club, will be representing C.A.P.S. at the Benque Viejo Dog Show where he will promote responsible pet ownership. C.A.P.S. has been covered by the Cayo Review in their June edition and has been promoted by Power F.M. and Channel 3. C.A.P.S. members have made presentations to local business leaders and individuals on a limited basis and strives to improve our public relations through responsible community promotion including; radio and T.V. broadcasting, presence at local events and regularly scheduled public C.A.P.S. meetings which take place every Thursday at 7:00 pm at the Cahal Pech Resort.
We would like to thank all of our members for their generous contributions and to invite everyone in the community to participate in assisting Cayo’s very vulnerable and dependent animal population. Donations of materials and personal involvement are highly regarded assets. Thank you for your interest in the Cayo Animal Protection Society.
Best Regards,
Justin Ford |
